Long before the Michael Vick dogfighting story broke, before Cesar Millan and his brood became famous, before many Americans could even tell you what a Pit Bull looks like, a small sanctuary in upstate New York was working to restore the image of the most misunderstood and mistreated breed in history. The sanctuary is Animal Farm Foundation (AFF), and the dogs they care for there are among the most gentle and loving animals one could ever hope to meet.

Most come from New York Animal Care and Control where Pit Bulls are routinely euthanized due to the sheer numbers entering the facility, and for the most part, their origins and histories are unknown. But some are rescued from dogfighting rings or other situations of unbelievable cruelty.

As I toured the bucolic sanctuary grounds, met the residents, and heard their stories, I came to understand that the remarkable aspect of all this is not that a few extraordinary animals were able to overcome severe mistreatment, but that such resilience and innate affability is the norm among the breed.

To hear more about this incredible organization, check out my radio interview with AFF's Stacey Coleman and Bernice Clifford.

pit bulls are such wondeful loving dogs. as are all dogs, but pits are so special because of their poor misguided opinons of most people. i was at the dog park once, and i was watching a great dane for a friend of mine and an iggnorent man came in and said to me, (with great stupidity of attitude and rudeness) "is that a pitbull? its shouldnt be here, they are vicious animals and should not be allowed anywhere near humans") i told the stupid stupid man that first of all this dog was a great dane, and second of all a pitbull is a wonderful loving breed and its people like you who know nothing about dogs that give thema bad name. you should be ashamed of yourself and not even be allowed to have the dog you have. i was applauded and the jerk of a man left the dog park. the next day i went, there were 2 pits there and as soon as i sat down they both came over to me and one decided he wanted to sit on my lap while the other gave me big sloppy kisses. my mother also has a pitbull chiuaua mix. yes i said pitbull chiuaua. lol they are such wonderful dogs, i would own a million if i could. people need to educate themselves about them and if they did, they would see they are heros and lovers and deserve to be treated as such.

aweome to bad more people do not understand are what makes these dogs or any other dog bad. I would like to see if you would care to help me with a project that I am working on and that is putting a book together about pits --I am asking people to send me stories about these wonderful babies about how they get along with other animals, how they came to be in your life and the funny things that they do. You can send that to doglover0305@yahoo.com

I think that story about rose is so cool I have a friend in the hospital who is fighting cancer who would apeciate that story. How ever I dobot agree with the vet about giving up on rose. I find that if an animal is not willing to give up on herself than I would not give up either. There are alternatives to convential meds that don't work. I almost died in the hospital my self and when doctors gave up on me and gave me a negative report I got a second opionion and was turned on to alternative medicine and it worked. I think the same should have been done for rose.

Animal Farm Foundation is a great group. You can tell that by the name. They don't call themselves "Pit Bull Rescue yadayadayada" They say Animal Farm Foundation. Please listen to the radio broadcast. When I first heard about sweet Rose in August 2008 and watched videos of her I had to leave the room. I had to hide my tears of shame for being part of the human race. I had to hide my sorrow for the pain that had befallen her. And yet, there she was, with extended belly and all wagging and being happy to be with people. Bernice, thank you for giving Rose the compassion she deserved. Not because she was a pit bull but because she was a dog and deserved to have compassion. The only dogs I take to schools for humane education are pit bulls. Not because they are pit bulls but because I can trust them. One dog at a time, one child at a time, one heart at a time. It's time for people to see beyond the label. You guys are fabulous.
