Chagrin Valley dog shampoo bars (4 biscuits)

Our take: You'll be able to recognize and pronounce all the ingredients in these bars. There are two types to choose from: The Cedarwood & Lavender bar has shea butter and aloe to moisturize and shine up the coat, as well as essential oils of cedarwood and fir needle to repel insects. The Honey & Oats bar is designed to soothe and heal itchy, irritated, or dry skin, and contains ingredients like aloe vera, jojoba oil, and--of course--honey and finely ground oats. Essential oils add a brisk, outdoorsy scent.

At six bucks a bar, these are a cheap way to keep your dog clean and green.

The dogs weigh in: Ginger hates getting a bath--she has the ASPCA dog abuse line on speed dial for when I start running the water--and nothing's going to change that. However, she seemed to prefer these bars to liquid shampoo, and she smelled and felt good afterward. She didn't mind the mild scent of oats and honey, but she may not have liked the stronger cedarwood. A perk for the planet: Using a bar instead of a bottle keeps more plastic out of the landfills.

Cost: low
