Dog food recipes?

Question:

I'd like to cook a healthy meal for my dog now and then. Are there particular ingredients I should use or can you recommend any recipes?

Answer:

One of the great things about dogs is that they need the same nutrients we do, which means they can eat most of the same foods we do.

In most cases, if you are making healthy meals for yourself--meaning that you are choosing different types of foods from each of the food groups, all relatively unprocessed and without added sugars or salt--they will be good for your dog too. (Some human foods can be harmful to dogs, so be careful with your recipes.)

You can also refer to a cookbook for dogs--look for one that addresses the need for calcium and phosphate. If you plan on regularly feeding your dog home-cooked meals, be sure to give him a multi-vitamin for nutritional insurance.

Reminder: watch out for the calories. Many dogs will eat anything put in front of them and portion size is just as important for them as it is for you. Dogs, just like people, need nutrients and calories in reasonable proportions for their weight and life stage. If they are missing nutrients, or getting too few or too many calories for their level of physical activity, it will be harder for them to stay healthy.

Hi, I live in Texas andall the animals seem to suffer from allergies. My sisters pets are allergic to the corn in the pet foods. I thought I would make my own pet food for my 3 dogs. They love it! I steam rice, put in 1 can of tuna or the innards and alittle skin from a chicken, pinto beans, fresh garlic, and Italian herbs. First, am I missing anything? Secondly, even though they are thriving and I don't need to give them Benedryl every day, their potty is very runny. Is there a way to help harden the poo? :)

Hi Sally Marsh - my name is Mary Gibbles and I went to the healthy dog experts website and it looks pretty cheesy, but I was curious about the comment you posted about your dog being sick all the time (my dog has been sick with many problems for awhile now)so I joined their healthy dog team, My dog just ate his first healthy dog meal this morning. HE LOVES IT! Today I am going to give my dog a bath healthy dog style. Thanx Sally Marsh, the healthy dog experts website may be cheesy but they know what their talkin about. Mary Gibbles

I have a Beagle and it has been sick with several chronic problems, skin allergies, etc. I went to this website called healthy dog experts and joined their team of members and I tell you what - my dog is in better shape then he has been in years. I could never find the right shampoo (not even baby shampoo) to give my dog a bath because he would break out all over in hives or something, but the customer service department recommended this formula of listerine, baby oil and purified water, that I sprayed on generously and then rubbed in and then dried him off with a towel and he barely ever itches and his skin is very soft and moisturized. The special recipe they gave me to feed my dog is incredible, in the three weeks I've been feeding him the healthy dog diet he has been more active, and seems to be more healthier and happier then he has ever been. the website address is www.healthydogexperts.org I visit your website quite often and I like what you stand for, you should link up with the healthy dog experts. • Senior dog is losing weight

My 13 year old shepard mix is losing weight. Its really become apparent the past few days. Of course I will be bringing him to the veterinarian, but I am wondering what suggestions people have for stimulating appetite and weight gain in an older dog. As a puppy he had serious digestive problems and needed to avoid the usual culprits (corn, wheat, soy). He has been eating Canidae All Life Stages supplemented with small amounts of healthy people food almost all his life. He is a self feeder and has always maintained a healthy weight. He has taken a very low dose of phenobarb for seizures the past 5 years and Rimadyl for arthritis the past 6 months. I really like Canidae (another dog of mine lived to 17.5 years so obviously the food is good). I also have a 1 1/2 year old lab mix at home and what I feed one is likely what I will feed the other. I am considering cooking food for my old guy, giving him more of our food, or adding canned Solid Gold (the canned Canidae seems to upset his tummy---not sure why). Suggestions?

  • Help

I feed my dogs home made food, but I occasionaly give them kibble. I used to feed Merrick dog food, but they revised their products and they now contain more fish. Lady cannot eat fish because it makes her sick. Most of the healthful brands seem to contain fish. Does anyone know of a good dog food that has little or no fish?

  • Picky eater

I am having trouble getting Cooper to eat. It is not that he is sick, he just hates what I feed him. The only food he will readily eat is meat, but he sometimes does not even like that. I cook for my dogs, and I have never seen a dog besides him turn his nose up to a good homecooked meal. How do I get him to love food?
