Definition of Colitis

A term used to describe a variety of infections where the large intestines, bowel, are inflamed. Symptoms are more commonly chronic diarrhea and occasionally chronic constipation can occur; weight loss usually occurs with the more severe cases. Treatment of Colitis depends on what the underlying cause of it is.
