Tracheal Collapse
Tracheal Collapse is often seen in smaller dog breeds such as Chihuahuas. It is caused by a weakening of the tracheal rings, which flattens until finally obstructing the airway. Symptoms of Tracheal Collapse include coughing that sounds like a goose honk, fainting and an intolerance of exercise. It is treated medically first with antibiotics, steroids, cough suppressants, and recommendations to use a harness instead of a collar. If medical treatment does not work, surgery is recommended.
