If your dog is not on a diet to lose weight and is eating a good quality dog food, then you need to take him to the vet. It is not normal for a young, healthy dog to lose a large amount of weight in a relatively short amount of time if he is eating the proper amount of food. There are many diseases that can be causing this problem that only your vet can determine through a physical exam and/or blood test.

I think your dog’s basic problem is that you do not have time for him/her and that he/she is not getting enough attention or exercise. You might consider if you really have the time it takes to take proper care of a dog.

Hi emoks,

You should give balanced nutrition and attention to your dog like having a roadwork if you have time. Here are some links that will help you solve this problem:

The health consequences of these extra pounds are just as serious, too: overweight dogs put greater stress on their joints, hearts, lungs, liver, and kidneys. They’re more prone to injury, and are at a higher risk during surgery. You should watch his daily meals and give him some exercises or games as well just to keep him moving or active.

Why would you have a dog just to lock it in a cage for long hours? I am not surprised that the poor animal is having problems. Also, how can it be getting 3 meals a day when there is no-one home?

I think a cat would be a more suitale pet for your household as they are more independent and need less company.

I feel sorry for the poor dog kept in such circumstances and suggest that a trip to the Vet is in order to eliminate anything other than the stress that it is so obviously suffering from.

Switching to dry food may help your dog lose weight as it tends to be less calorie-dense than canned food. Cutting back on the amount of food and on the frequency of treats also helps your dog control his weight.

The best diet for dogs is low in fat and high in fiber. Puppies under 12 months of age need extra protein, calcium, and iron to accommodate growth. Your veterinarian may prescribe a special weight-loss formula food for your dog. Weight loss should be attained slowly. A one to two percent loss per week is best.
