hi most people know cats cannot be with dogs but it’s possible for them to be best of friends. it also depends to your pets. |

Hi, here’s a link that gives a list of dogs that are least likely to chase cats |

I see no problem if you want to get a dog to join your family. I have had both dogs and cats for years, and most of my friends own both dogs and cats. The most important thing is proper intoduction of dog into you household. Do not just bring the dog in and turn him loose. I would crate the dog and allow your cats to check him out from a safe distance. After you have introduced the them with the aid of the crate, put the dog on a lead, so you have control, and allow the cats to come up to him. Last step turn them loose together. The most important thing is to make sure the cats have a safe place to escape, like a room blocked with a baby gate where the cats can go, but the dog can’t. I adopted my male Lab when he was 5 years old, and trust me, he did not like cats. I followed the steps listed above and everything is fine. It did take work, but it was worth it. Now he likes to nap with the one cat and they groom each other. You can also ask you vet for suggestions on how to introduce a dog into your cat household. Good Luck. |

I have four dogs and four cats and they all get along just fine. There are a few tips for finding a dog that will fit in — work with a rescue that fosters its dogs and knows a given dog gets along well with cats; opt for a puppy, ideally of a breed that tends to be good with cats (some breeds have a very high prey drive and can attack and kill even a former best friend cat if the dog gets overexcited); opt for a breed known to be good with cats. Most puppies if socialised well with cats, get along fine. Because I had cats before I gt my dogs, I chose a breed known to be friendly with cats. Not all dogs and cats will be good friends but most will grow to tolerate each other, so have reasonable expectations too. :) Introductions are always a management issue and smart owners always keep an eye out when their dogs and cats are around each other. A dog can kill a cat, even accidentally; while a cat can take a dog’s eye out or injure it seriously, also in play, hence the need for caution especially in the first few weeks of settling in. However cats need protection and dogs need restraint — that’s the bottom line. Have dogs on leads for all introductions and follow the guidelines noted on the link above. The idea of having somewhere vertical for cats to go is also excellent. Cats feel safe when they can climb. I have a couple of cat trees so cats can have their own space well out of reach of dogs. |

Goes the saying fighting cats and dogs, but it is perfectly possible that these 2 species could live happily under one roof. And it is also possible that a cat can injure a dog, and a dog can seriously hurt or kill a cat. Try to read on this articles to arm you with some know how before introducing a new dog to your home… http://dogtime.com/introducing-dog-and-cat.html |

I have four cats and my yorkie gets along with all of them. I woudl suggest that you get the dog as a puppy or get the dog from a rescue agency they can help more with your decision on what kind of dog you should get. It takes a liitle time at first when you get the dog but then they will all warm up to each other. |
