Dog-wolf hybrid?

Question:

I'm interested in a dog-wolf hybrid--what should I know?

answered by Nicole Wilde

Answer:

Wolfdogs, also known as wolf hybrids, are a mix of wolf and dog. They range from low wolf content (mostly dog) to very high content (mostly wolf), and are usually mixed with Malamute, Husky, or German Shepherd. While wolfdogs can be beautiful, affectionate, loving companions, they are also not the perfect choice of pet for the average person.

Here are some things to consider: First, legalities. Wolfdogs are illegal to own in many areas. If yours escapes and ends up at the local shelter, chances are you may not get him back.

That brings us to containment. Wolfdogs can clear a six-foot fence without much effort. Are you willing to spend the time and money to build proper containment, which may include modifying your fencing or building an enclosure?

These large, strong animals can be quite energetic and destructive--a potentially hazardous combination! Wolfdogs who have been left unsupervised in apartments, for example, have been known to tear up lineoleum and eat through drywall.

Are you prepared to provide the intense level of exercise required by these energetic canines? The twice-daily 15-minute potty-walk that works fine for your Bichon won't cut it for a wolfdog. Depending on age and genetics, figure on an average of one to two hours of solid exercise per day.

As a general rule, the "wolfier" the animal looks, the more wolf-like behaviors it will have. Unfortunately, those behaviors include a strong prey drive (potentially not conducive to the longevity of small animals like cats or rabbits), and a serious tendency toward resource guarding. Remember, the higher the wolf content, the stronger the wolf-like tendencies. Wolfdogs are absolutely not recommended for families with small children.

Pure wolves are naturally afraid of people. Higher content wolfdogs often have major fear issues, and can be extremely skittish around people and new environments. Are you willing to take on a potentially lifelong project involving extensive behavior modification and careful management?

You may have gotten the impression by now that I dislike wolfdogs. In fact, nothing could be farther from the truth. I offer this information from the perspective of someone who has worked with pure wolves and wolfdogs in rescue for over fifteen years. I truly love these animals, but over and over I have seen what happens when that cute wolfy-looking puppy becomes a mouthy, out-of-control adolescent--think doggy teenage behavior times ten!

My goal in sharing this information is to prevent the heartbreak that occurs when a nice, well-meaning person raises a wolfdog but at some point just can't live with the behavior any longer, forcing the animal to live out its life in a rescue center--and that's if he's lucky.

Please, please consider carefully before you make a decision that could impact many lives. Wolf Hybrids are NOT the dog for very many people. I have a lovely hybrid that is high percentage - looks completely wolf. I rescued him on I-80 where someone had dumped him. He can sit at the base of my 6' fence and jump it. He is very, very active. He has a 1600 square foot enclosure with 8' fencing and 4' wide dig-out wire. He also has a Magnum kennel that is tarped on 3.5 side for warmth and weather protection in the winter and shade/cool in the summer. He loves the water and has his own "swimming pool" a 6' round stock tank that is kept full of water and is stocked with goldfish to eat mosquito larvae and otherwise help keep it clean. He has a big rock in the center of his pen that he can climb on to be up high. I have seen him standing with all four feet on the back of my sofa when something is going on outside that the wants to see. This pen is his home when I am away from home during the day. When I am home during the day and every night he is with me inside the house and he sleeps beside me on my bed. On really cold nights it is wonderful to have him to snuggle up to. He is very affectionate and loving to his friends. After seven years of good care and training he walks well on the leash and loves a good hike. He is timid when meeting strangers and does not warm up quickly although he allows petting as long as I keep them away from the top of his head. He is really beautiful and people can't seem to resist coming over and asking if they can pet him. He can be dog aggressive and is not allowed off-lead when out and about. He prefers to be a home-body except when we go camping which is his favorite adventure. He will still mark in the house occasionally if not caught at it, gets on the counters, steals unsupervised food, and chews things up. Leather good are among his favorite unauthorized things to chew with my books being a close second. He is very demanding of my time and energy and has never shown aggression to a human - he would much rather run away. Some of my neighbors fear him because of the stories they have heard about wolf hybrids and I take extra care to make sure he does not escape. Vet care is interesting because they have to provide disclaimers that vaccines, etc. have not been tested on wolves and are not guaranteed for them. I provide most of the vet tech work when we visit the vet as he is shy and extremely skittish at the vet unless I am with him. I am the boss (alpha) and he doesn't play with me like he will with other friends whom he does not see as dominant to him. He also must be on a special prescription diet because he forms spicules in his urine that block the urethra and could kill him. He is definitely high maintenance and demands lots of attention and other dog buddies who aren't too close to his age. I spend a few hours each day entirely on him-grooming, training and playing. If you are considering a hybrid-think about it long and hard before making this commitment. These animals are very hard to place and most shelters in my area will not adopt them out so any that end up there are killed. The wolf genetics are wild and you must be prepared, knowledgeable, understanding and extremely patient with lots of time to spend one-on-one before considering a wolf-hybrid as a pet. Even the low percentage animals display some quirky behavior and don't react like a dog will.

we been testing on hybrid Best result are a multi-generation mix breeding. ALWAYS choosing the more good mood humor of pups for making the next generation. Get the best result with breeding: Husky-->Husky-->Germain Shelper. This mix are very good with children, VERY SMART, high winter tolerance, obedient and non-aggressive. the con is:Need space, high physical activity, climber and digger , ESCAPE MASTER (8' METAL galvanize fence + continue at least 2' underground with concrete for holding it here. ADD A ELECTRIC WIRE on top of the fence, watch and you will know why...) AND WATCH WHAT YOU LET it SHEW!!! JAWS OF STEEL!!! Difficulty to digest dog food! TOO MUCH playful
