Our take: This 3.5 inch high foam bed has an oval shape in which the dog curls up, so the nesting area size is more important than the actual size of the bed. Made from their patented polyurethane GelFoam, it molds to the dog's body. The cover, which is made of two separate fabrics (fleece and fake suede), can be machine washed in cold water but needs to be line dried.

It's a comfortable well-constructed choice and, unless your dog is incontinent, the foam shouldn't get wet. They sell liners but I'd rather have a bed I can just throw in the washer. Getting the cover back on after washing it is difficult.

The dogs weigh in: Tiny ancient 9-pound Clint loved this bed. Arthritic and a medical train wreck, he was clearly comfortable in it. He seemed to feel safe all nestled in, snug as a bug in a rug, but his incontinence made the washing an issue for me. Not a good choice for dogs who like to spread out, but a good choice for those who like to curl up.

Cost: high

  • Custom Dog Bed from theDogLife

I was looking everywhere for a bed that would fit directly into my dogs crate or would be close but after months of looking I almost gave up. Finally I found a company called theDogLife (www.thedoglife.ca) that made what they were calling "custom dog beds". I sent an email and within a few minutes I had a reply from the company saying they will make ANY size I wanted. I got a quote on a complete custom bed, 24.5" x 32" x 2" made of their microfiber material (like my couch) and my bed was shipped out in under a week! All said and done, my pup and I couldn't be happier! Check them out if you need a dog bed and the usual stores just aren't cutting it. thedoglife.ca Cheers, James
