Sometimes the best way to get an original dog name that fits your pooch's personality is to look back in history, to the names we're still talking about today. Got a dog who's the queen of the dog park? Try 'Cleopatra.' Think your pup's gorgeous mug could launch a thousand ships? Go with 'Helen.'

We adopted a dog who was given the odd name: Marmalade (yes like the jam). We didn't like the name or her nickname (Marmie) like the mom in Little Women. So we changed it to Adelaide and she immediately responded to this name with NO transition at all. It is a great name and yes, a historical and classical name you don't hear at the dog park or on walks with children. Anonymous MN
