Pet Insurance Grid Category Definitions

Approximate cost

The dollar amounts in this row reflect the approximate monthly cost of each pet insurance plan. As insurance premiums can vary based on a pet’s age, breed, state of residence, and medical history, these numbers should be used as a guideline.

Maximum age at enrollment

The age listed is the oldest a pet can be at the time he or she is enrolled in a particular insurance plan. In the case of PetFirst’s senior plan, the age listed is the youngest a pet can be to enroll.

Accident & Illness

A check in this row means that a plan includes coverage for pet accidents and illnesses. An “X” means that accidents and illnesses are not covered. A check with an “*” next to it means that coverage is offered in the case of an accident, but not an illness.

Dental Cleanings

A check in this row means that a plan includes coverage for routine dental cleanings. An “X” in this box means routine cleanings are not covered. A plan that does not cover routine cleanings may still cover dental work and extractions related to an accident or an injury. Check with each company for details.

Prescription medications

A check in this row means that a plan includes coverage for prescription medications. An “X” in this box means medications are not covered. As with human insurance, not all prescriptions will be covered by every plan. Check with each company for details.

Routine care / Wellness exams

A check in this row means that a plan includes coverage for routine visits and/or wellness exams, such as a yearly checkup and routine tests and screenings. An “X” in this box means routine visits and/or wellness exams are not covered. Exams, tests, and screenings covered vary by company, so check with each insurer for details.

Surgery & Hospitalization

A check in this row means that a plan includes coverage for certain surgeries and hospitalization. An “X” in this box means surgery and hospitalization are not covered. The types of surgery covered vary by plan and provider, so check with each insurer for details.

Vaccinations

A check in this row means that a plan includes coverage for certain vaccinations. An “X” in this box means vaccinations are not covered. Not every company covers every type of vaccine, so check with each insurer for details.

Available add-ons

This row lists coverage that can be added to a plan for an additional monthly fee.

Exclusions

This row denotes conditions for which a plan does not offer coverage, such as pre-existing conditions. Not all plan exclusions are listed, so check with each insurer for details.
