When bullies are sweeties

Dispatch from the Santa Fe Humane Society shelter, December 1, 2009 (part II)

Hard to believe there are still those who insist that the "bully breeds" are a vicious lot. Today at the shelter was all about them - Pitties, Staffies, and even a Bull Terrier. Their only aggressive aspect was their ferocious charm; their only commonality, the green dot on their kennel card, indicating they'd been evaluated and are safe to interact with.

Bronx, the brindle, pretends to be shy indoors. Once he's out in the park, however, he leaps and gallops with all the zest of... well... a happy, well-adjusted dog.

The brown and white spotted male stays close, but veers off the path each time he catches sight or scent of a bird. Every so often we stop for a pet. (I do the petting, he calmly accepts.)

And the Bull Terrier is just plain goofy. He inspects the bushes and trees carefully before marking. When he's finished, his hind legs paw at the ground sending bits of rock and dirt flying in all directions.

I'd take each one if I could. And not just to prove that this is what gentle, friendly, affectionate dogs look like.

Bullies are beautiful dogs! I have worked at a vet clinic for 6 years and in all that time I have seen many pits with only one not being so nice but I contribute that to the owner for not training the dogs better. In those 6 years, I have seen many chihuahua and many of them were not very nice. So, it isn't the breed. Bad breeding and owners are the only dangers of the bullie breed. Hopefully, people will soon realize this but sadly, once the bullie rep is changed, the same cruel people that caused bullies to have a bad rep will start with another breed to be the next vicious breed. We once again will all have to rally together to prove them wrong once again. Thank Save a Dog for helping the bullies.

Bullies are beautiful and like any other breed you have your good ones and not so good. However, most of the ones that aren't so nice are that way because of their owners. I work at a vet clinic and have seen many. Only one was not a nice dog but the owner should have trained him better. In 6 years there, I have seen one not so nice pit and about 10 or more not very nice chihuahuas! So, people need to stop giving them such bad press. I am glad Save a Dog is working towards changing the minds of closed minded people about this breed. But like all the ones before them, once people start to accept them, another breed will be branded and we will all have to rally together again to get the truth out - It isn't a breed. It is the owner and the people that breed the most aggressive ones with another aggressive one then train them to fight and be mean. Stop the bad breeding and cruelty and there would be no more bad breeds!

Bullies are no "bullies"! I love my boys, Zeke and a Duff. Two of the most incredible dogs ever! Both AMBTs, father and son. Zeke just turned 14 on Thanksgiving and Duff is 12...so far they haven't eaten any children! ; ) Seriously though, they have brought us so much joy, laughter, love and companionship over the years. They are like our children! I thank God for the awareness that's taking place more and more, but there's still a lot of work to do when it comes to erasing the stigma of bully breeds. God bless the bullies...and all their k9 cousins!
