Big hope for tiny Chihuahua

Dispatch from the Santa Fe Humane Society shelter, January 12, 2010

Even notoriously extroverted breeds, like Labs and Golden Retrievers, seem to be arriving shy and skinny this week. The gray days of January are affecting all of us.

The Chihuahua in the first run of kennels is the most extreme case - as timid as she is bony. She eats food from my hand but has no interest in any further physical contact. Shies away if I reach out to her without a treat to offer. I don't blame her; if I were that malnourished, my only priority would be to beef up.

Some dogs who suffer a prolonged period without basic needs never quite recover - physically or emotionally. I think this one will come around, though. I was shy and skinny once too. Then I found my home.

When I first passed her kennel, I assumed she was a long-eared Chihuahua mix. So small and delicate. I was stunned, then, to learn she was a Beagle. Completely malnourished and undersized. Like so...

Almost every dog I've had has been rescued in one way or another. Either someone misstreated them or I've found them wondering around. I even took one from my own grandson who was mistreating her. I found an old blind dog and I'm keeping her so she can live her life instead of her being put to sleep because no one wanted her. I love all my dogs and I've had 13 at one time so no one would mistreat them. Jan. 21, 2010 N.C.

There have been too many stories of dogs being abandoned because of the economy. How can you do that to someone you love. Try to find a home or turn it in to a rescue club. But to just abandon them is also evil.
