Smitten with a Shepherd

Dispatch from the Santa Fe Humane Society shelter, November 17, 2009

I tend to fall for the bigger guys, and as I've said, I love the shy ones. Add sort of a goofball element and it's just all over for me. (I know, I might as well still be in high school.) The big goofy Shepherd mix in the back run proved a combo that sent me reeling.

He sees me admiring him and he rolls his ears bashfully into his paws, "aww... shucks" in the thought bubble above his head. Because he's a stray and won't be formally evaluated for another day or two (standard safety procedure for every dog), volunteers aren't yet permitted inside his kennel. But I can pet him through the bars and toss treats to the back of the kennel in a little game I call Find It.

He kisses my hand, I blush

I say to myself that he might just be the sweetest dog in the entire shelter right now, and believe me, competition is fierce. I make moony eyes at him and he licks my fingers. When it's time to go, I swear he smiles at me before getting to work on the Kong I leave him with. Not sure if he noticed I blushed.

I lost my husky rescue "Max" just over two years ago at the end of October. After arranging for his cremation, I immediately hit the pet finder.com site. It was there I found a husky mix at the SPCA in Bethlehem Pa area. I barely slept that night and left early the next day to see my potential new animal friend. I got to the kennel and found my Aurora. While walking her around she seemed very shy and skittish. She let me pet her and gave me kisses. She has the most beautiful tri color blue eyes. The reason for her name, comes from the beautiful colors of the northern lights(aurora borealis). While walking her around the kennel grounds I walked by one cage and I too was trapped by the innocent actions of another Husky. He gave me the big sad whine and sad eyes. Then cried for my attention. I was lost I have a small 2 room apartment(not two bedroom just 2 room). My previous dog was a joy to live with very quiet and gentle. The thing is I was trapped by guilt standing there looking at this beautiful husky, you could tell he was a purebred, and the other was a mix. I asked the kennel person to let them play together. I said if they get along I guess I have two new dogs. The SPCA people were surprised I was taking two stray huskies. They probably had an idea how sick most of the dogs there were and figured this poor guy has no idea what he is geting into. Well that day started out miserably sad for me having lost a 3yr old husky who was going to be the main character in a series of books I had planned. It ended with me curled up in bed with two beautiful new roommates. Askim my male and Aurora my female turned out to be very sick. The result of poor conditions at the Shelter. You name it, they had everything but Parvo. I spent the next 2 months treating intestional, urinary tract, kidney, and stomach infections as well as every type of worms a dog can get. It also results in hundreds of accidents in the house until they were better. Well needless to say my life is now completely theirs. I plan my activities around making sure they get enough time each day. Walks are a priority. Days off are spent going to the dog park and making dinners to share with them. I also have created a permanent bond between the two strays I adopted. They cannot be separated. They are the best friends I have ever seen in animals. So I can definetly relate to this story because I was originally had the intention of bringing home one husky, but fell prey to the sad eyes and mournful cry of another one. Now I have two of the most beautiful animals anyone could ever ask for in life. Jim Fox
