Elderly Cocker Spaniel seeking... answers

UPDATE (see bottom of article)

Dispatch from the Santa Fe Humane Society shelter, November 6, 2009

She's fifteen years old, slightly overweight, and wears a black harness. Though she's come in as a stray, clearly this dog had an owner. Her tail is docked. She's spayed. No question she lived as someone's family pet for a long time.

So was it the tumor protruding from the right side of her muzzle that landed her here? Was she simply deposited out on the street when it became evident she'd need medical attention?

She deserved better.

This dog is not lost. She's elderly and can't run far or fast. She's been at the shelter for days. If someone was looking for her, they would've easily found her by now.

Instead, she'll live her last days in a noisy kennel, wondering where her family is. I wonder too--wonder if they're haunted by their actions. And her image.

UPDATE: Thanks again to everyone who expressed concern for this dog. While he's been made as comfortable as possible during his time here at the shelter, his age, his medical conditions and his behavior issues all contribute to the staff strongly recommending that they end his suffering, and I fully support that decision. His passing will take place among people who have treated and cared for him over the past weeks, and with the utmost tenderness and compassion.

It makes me so sad to think that anyone can leave a dog that has been their best friend and companion . I wish that I could help, but I cannot have a dog right now. Thanks for caring for them. Violet Taitz

Oh this just infuriates me! To live and give of your whole life to make your "owner" happy only to be dumped off in your time of greatest need. I use the term owner loosely as applicable to this poor girl's owner as those who truly love their fur baby are not owners but best friend, mommy, daddy. One of my darling girls (both were beautiful Cocker Spaniels) was not ready to leave this world yet and needed a feeding tube, numerous medications, and to be administered sub-cutaneous fluids by me. My other darling had lymphoma which was not diagnosed early enough for treatment but if it had I would have done whatever was necessary to help and comfort her in the way of treatment. I would have sold my teeth if I had to in order to take care of my girls as I made a lifelong commitment to them. As much as I am not ready for another I would have done something to help out this poor elderly cutie and perhaps would have opened my home as so many other offered to do. This doggie deserved so much better. We should not be just thankful for them but TO THEM for gracing our lives with THEIR presence. Be in peace little one.
