Small dogs who are good for first time owners

Many experts advise first time dog owners to start with a small dog. Now you may be thinking, "But the Yellow Lab in the movie Marley and Me was soooo cute!" I agree he was very cute, but he also did a lot of damage to his owner's house and furnishings. Are you really ready to deal with all of that the first time around?

I'll try to make a case for smaller dogs: They won't keep outgrowing their collars, crates, beds or other accessories (more money in your pocket); they produce less doggie doo (less poop to scoop); they eat less food (even more money in your pocket) and; they can't reach those steaks you left thawing on the kitchen counter!
