Dogtime's Road to Rescue program salutes Tails of Hope, promoting wellness in the minds, hearts, and bodies of all living things

How did your organization get started?
Tails of Hope started in August of 2000. As a volunteer in a local shelter, I watched so many young, adoptable animals being euthanized and knew that many of them could be saved from this tragedy and placed in loving homes. Tails of Hope obtained a 501(c)(3) status and opened our doors to the first animal.

Ted E. Bear, a success story

What is your mission?
Tails of Hope Sanctuary fosters healthy relationships among people, animals, and the earth by rescuing animals in need, teaching humane and environmental education, and promoting wellness in the minds, hearts, and bodies of all living things.

How do most of your animals find their way to you?
Tails of Hope takes in animals from area shelters when they call us for help. Either the shelter is full or they have an animal who needs additional help recovering from an injury or illness.

What happens to the animals once they are in your care?
The animals are placed in foster homes until adopted. Tails of Hope does operate a small Cattery where cats coming into rescue can live in a cage-free environment.

Tell us about a particularly compelling animal or inspiring rescue.
Ted E. Bear was a sweet, homeless puppy wandering the streets of Baltimore, MD. Although he solicited attention from people on the street, he was mostly ignored. He was witnessed being kicked by someone on a street corner and was found to have a burn mark on his back as well as a broken leg. When this dear little guy was finally picked up, Tails of Hope was asked to take him into rescue. After getting Ted E. Bear the surgery necessary for his leg injury and some much-needed TLC, this puppy was placed in a loving home and is enjoying life today with his family. Ted E. Bear is one of our all time favorites at Tails of Hope!

Always had a soft spot for animals. I can say with all certainty that if I had seen someone kick that little dog I would have returned the favor. More than a few times. We have a wonderful cat that we rescued after finding him abandoned as a kitten. He's EXTREMELY loving and friendly. In addition we have two dogs, and I'm thinking we may have to get another one. My mother in law has a neighbor with a dog that's kept in a 6x6 pin with a 50 gallon drum turned on it's side for a dog house. They don't pay him any attention and he spends his time on the top of the drum to stay out of his own filth. We've called the sheriff, and the humane society and they have done nothing. I'm thinking I'm going to have to take the day off in the near future and go steal/rescue him from these idiots. Wish me luck!! JB

I was born an animal lover ! In my 51 years on this earth my passion for animals keeps growing with each passing year, especially to the abused, neglected and unloved ones. Hard to believe that I almost love animals more than I do people. How can a person look at Ted E. Bear's beautiful, innocent face, who only wants to give love and be loved, hurt him physically as well as emotionally. They feel pain and have emotions just like we do. Just because they can't "talk", doesn't mean they don't try to communicate to us in their many different body languages, all we have to do is pay attention. It just breaks my heart into a million pieces to read stories like this. When I was a kid I witnessed my adoptive mother abuse our miniature poodle and that poor little guy would come to me whimpering and shaking like a leaf. I would just hold him and cry never understanding what he did that was so terrible to warrant the beatings he often got. That will forever be etched in my mind! I too was also abused by that same wicked woman and even though our dog was scared of her, I will never forget how he tried to protect me! Having said that, I have zero compassion/tolerance for anyone who abuses a defenseless animal or child. So when I read stories about people like you, it makes my heart happy to know that there are good people who really care about an animal's well being and are doing something about it. It's people like you that make this world a better place. I thank God for YOU and the rest of the GOOD people who give up their time and energy to help the victims in this world !! May God guide all of you down this difficult path.

No one in their right mind should deserve to have a good life and feel no guilt after mistreating the poor little puppy. It`s just not right !

Look at that adorable face - how can people be so cruel to the helpless defensless animals? People who abuse animals deserve whatever misery that comes to them
