Is it ok to beat your dog when training it?
i just got a new dog and would like to know if beating when it does something bad is the only effective way to train it?
ok if theres one thing I hate, its a dog that doesn't listen. If my dog starts doing something like scratching at a door, what alternatives are there other than yelling at it and hitting it? If I do that, then he'll associate me yelling at him with pain. Then hopefully the next time he does some... (continued)

shih tzu not sleeping at night
My 9 month old shih tzu will not sleep through the entire night anymore. He has been crate trained since I brought him home at 6 weeks and up until about a month ago he would sleep through the night. I always take him out last thing before I go to bed. Now he wakes up at least once, whining and barking for no reason. I thought at first when he started doing it he may have needed to go outside however, when I would ... (continued)

The Dog-Wolf Link and Dominance Training
I live with 2 dogs and work as a dog walker for the past 10 years and I totally agree with this article. Our dogs like to sit with us and they both sleep on the bed, also the dogs we walk run around and smell every inch of there walk everyday but when I call them they are right by my side. If you treat a dog with respect you get it back and more.

The Dog-Wolf Link and Dominance Training
Sorry but a dog without a leader will BECOME the leader. Every waking moment of a dog's life is "leader / follower" oriented. If you let your dog lead you he will be well behaved.. until the time when there is a need to lead him. This article is all wrong. It's par for the corse in "Dog Time". I always find all kinza screwie things in here. we should first learn the diference between a dog "trainer" and a behaviori... (continued)

The Dog-Wolf Link and Dominance Training
This may be why I can't figure out who's alpha in our 2-dog pack, and I couldn't figure out our previous 2-dog pack, either. The dogs in both packs trade(d) off or act(ed) as equals, based on the situation or mood at any given time. The "open group" concept makes a lot more sense to me than the "wolf pack."
I believe we humans do need to take ultimate responsibility to keep our canine friends safe and healthy,... (continued)

The Dog-Wolf Link and Dominance Training
Agreed, dominance theory has been pretty much debunked. However, you don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. Your dog doesn't want a "friend". Your dog wants a leader that will help him navigate what is an essentially alien world. If you want an animal to sleep with you, get a cat and don't destroy some helpless dog.

The Dog-Wolf Link and Dominance Training
The dominance theory is nothing but a lot of bunk. I've had dogs all my life and I'm 53. I've never owned a dog, they have been my companion and equal. I treat them like one of my children. The little girl I have now was a rescue from a mill. I got her the first of July 2008. The 6th of October at the age of 9 months old, she literally saved my life. My dogs sleep in my bed, share my food and take me for walks. I don't think I need to say any more.

The Dog-Wolf Link and Dominance Training
This was a GREAT article! Having dogs for nearly 60 years, this "dominance theory" that you are supposed to exert over your dog is garbage. The dogs I have owned NEVER needed this kind training. There MAY be an individual dog who is rebelious or difficult to train who may benefit from this, but otherwise my dogs have always been my friends, not my subjects.

The Dog-Wolf Link and Dominance Training
I am amused that the author roundly condemns dog training methods that conflict with her viewpoint as "too general" or not scientific. She then makes her point by giving examples of what she does with her one dog. That's science? I concur although this article may illicit a warm & fuzzy feeling from the uninformed it is indeed unhelpful.

Thanks for this article. I never liked the alpha-male idea. My dog is a friend and a member of the family. Not a slave.
In my opinion, obedience to a show standard feels kind of like brain-washing and strips the dog of any personality. I like my dogs burst of excitement when I get home, and I like her cunning ways to steal food.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against perfectly obedient dogs, just not the type for me.
