I love dogs, especially German Shepherds. I believe all dogs should go through obedience training with everyone in their household. Not only do you have a more well behaved dog, the training bonds the dog with his/her owners. Very important. Wish I had more energy to play with my puppy, but I think she's getting plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.

She was found in Georgia with her German Shepherd mother and 6 litter mates on the 4th of July, all dirty & covered with fleas and ticks. A kind soul grabbed them all and drove them all the way to Sanford, FL to the shelter Pet Rescue By Judy, where she was cleaned and treated and placed in a wonderful foster home. My husband and I were looking for a German Shepherd, and when we saw her beautiful little face, it was all over for us. We've had her about a month now and she's fitting into the family better, but it's going slowly with Nikki. Kelly likes Nikki, but Nikki doesn't seem to like a little puppy licking her face & ears and wanting to play with her all the time. Nikki is only slightly more tolerant of Kelly now than when Kelly first joined our family. I think it will just take more time, since Nikki is pretty old and apparently averse to change, especially change in the form of a rambunctious puppy! There's no blood-letting or real violence, so I think Nikki is jealous and annoyed but will come around when she figures out that Kelly is here to stay. Maybe it's a "pecking order" conflict, or maybe Nikki is too old and sore (her leg bothers her quite a bit now that she's older) to put up with Kelly's attentions. Anybody out there have any advice?

Had sores from malnutrition that had to be surgically removed when I got her; her previous "family" had just abandoned her when they shipped out of Yokosuka, Japan. Then, when I went on leave back to the States a couple of weeks after I adopted her, she had an accident of some kind, leaving her right rear leg mangled and broken. When I returned and saw the damage, I nearly fainted. I nursed her for months, getting her back to health, and nearly lost her several times. She's a survivor, though, and she put her trust in me, as I ran water on her wounds, salved and bandaged her, repositioned her splint, and wrapped her leg -- all of which hurt her so much she couldn't eat, so she began starving to death. I was able to get pain medication for her (from a reticent vet who told me, "Dogs don't feel pain!" I wanted to choke him for that, and I had to threaten to go to his Commanding Officer to get the meds!) and she began eating again. I fixed her special meals to get her weight and nutrition back, and now she's still spoiled! I just never had the heart after that to deny her food whenever she wanted it, so she's about 5 lbs overweight now. She & I sure bonded during those horrible months, so something good came out of it all. We still don't know how she got hurt, but suspect it was a car that did the damage. She has a sweet, loving nature. She's never met a human she didn't like, even that crazy vet! I'll get a picture posted as soon as I can.
