Sunny
- Anatolian Shepherd and Coon Hound
- 16 years (118 dog years)
- Bono Boy
- Parks himself right in front of you & talks to be let outside!
- Licks the carpet until he makes a hole in it.
- Family member had his father & we loved him.
-
Sunny came to us when a family member no longer wanted him because he had alot of health issues & at the time he had lost his eye in a fight with a Bobcat. The same Bobcat killed his father. My husband & I took him in about 1996 so his sister would have a friend to play with. His sister died in 2001 because she ran out into the road & was hit by a truck. It devastated me because Sunny stopped & she didn't! I guess she thought she was invincible. 14 yrs later, he's still with us & what a great dog he has been.!
Reba
- Vizsla/mix and Hound
- 8 years (62 dog years)
- Yeba-Yeba
- Sits automatically when she sees a baggie
- Covers herself with her blanket
- Taken from a hoarder
-
Reba came to us from the same hoarder that had Dixie & Kathy & had never known a kind word. She was very indifferent to her surroundings & could of cared less about people. NOW she won't leave us alone! She has a totally different opinion of people & loves us! She loves toys & rolling in the grass on warm days. She appreciates everything you give her, bed, toys, food, snacks & love! She is very obedient & loves to go for walks. She is a bit of a princess & doesn't really like to share the attention but she's learned to tolerate it because she knows she'll get alot of loving too! She will tell you when she has to go out like nobody's business. We think it's because she's such a diva she doesn't want to mess up her space! Either way, she's a good girl for doing that & we tell her so everyday! You can see her with the other dogs at SLAL.ORG.
Ebony & Lilly
- Plott Hound/Coon Hound mix
- 6 years (48 dog years)
- Eboneezy & Lilly Monger
- Take their blankets out of the house & then put them back in
- eating poop
- Abandoned in the Ocala National forest
-
Lilly & Ebony were rescued along with 8 other siblings & their mother in 32 degree weather out in the forest. The animal control wasn't going to keep them so we took them in. Everyone has found homes except for my Lilly & Ebony. When Lilly got her first home, she had kids that were very mean to her so now she doesn't like kids. Ebony has been & is still scared of her own shadow although she has never been mistreated. They were 5 weeks old when they came here with Mom & have been with me ever since. They are both very beautiful dogs with very good personalities. I'm hoping somebody out there can relate to their demise & find it in their hearts to try & help them out with the understanding & patience they need. They are very good with the other dogs & very well behaved whenever they go anywhere. We love they girls & think they deserve a chance at having their very own people to love! Please see them at SLAL.ORG. They deserve someone special!
Dixie
- Doberman/Terrier mix
- 12 years (84 dog years)
- Dixie Darling
- Steals the other dogs toys without getting caught
- Buries all the other dogs toys so we can't find them
- She was rescued from a hoarder situation
-
Dixie is one of my Foster's that came to me from a hoarder. She would take dogs in & just keep them in a kennel with no exposure for them to find homes. She was also very mistreated during that time & was very miss-trustful to anyone who tried to be nice to her. We later found out she was hurting in her rear end from a large piece of tissue hanging out of her rectum! Once we had it removed, she was & is a different dog. She has learned how to play, get along with other dogs & loves attention, which she now gets a ton of!. She is still looking for that forever home & would be a wonderful family friend to some one who knows what it's like to just be forgotten about! You can see her on the SLAL.ORG website along with all our other dogs & cats for adoption. We have alot of special needs as you will see on the site!
Benjamin
- German Shepherd/lab mix
- 13 years (97 dog years)
- Benji
- The butt dance
- Pushing his butt against you to be petted
- He was abandoned & stopped at my house
-
Ben came to us as he was walking down the road one day. He turned when he saw me in the driveway, came & sat at my feet & gave me his paw! We ran adds & put out signs but nobody claimed him. We adopted him out a few times but he didn't like kids very much & was a dog that would bite so we kept him for our own. I live in the middle of the woods & having a dog that wasn't afraid to protect me was very comforting. He knew the difference. When people were over to visit, he was on his best behavior but you raised you hand or voice to me & he was right there to protect me! He was the best snake catcher ever. Not once did a snake get the better of him. Coral, Rattler, Cotton Mouth, Garder, Black, it didn't matter. I've never ever seen a dog that could do that. Of course we weren't happy about the good snakes but he was determined to keep his yard safe no matter what kind! Ben recently passed away in June of 2009 from Liver failure. It was, as always, one of the hardest things we do as rescue people. But when their quality of life is no longer fun or pleasant for them, it is the right thing to do. I am ALWAYS with them when they go to tell them how much I love & appreciate them for coming into my life & I will see you on the other side. I will miss my Protector dearly, he was truly one of a kind!!! I love you Benji
Lucky
- American Pitt Bull Terrier
- 11 years (83 dog years)
- Lucka ta bucka ta
- Walking on his hind legs
- He squeaks instead of barking
- He was abandoned with a injured right front leg
-
Lucky was found on the side of the road dragging his right front leg & 2 inches of his intestines sticking out his rear end. He had to have the leg amputated & 4 surgeries to put his intestines back in his body. During all this time, he never once growled or bit anyone. He was always so appreciative of any attention he got & came through all his surgeries great. He was a high heart-worm positive when we got him but after 2 1/2 yrs on Heartgard Chewables he came up negative. He was our Mascot going to Nursing Homes & Schools to educate people about his breed. We just Lost Lucky on March 3 2010, his birthday, to natural causes. We did all we could but his life wasn't fun anymore so we had to make the very, very hard decision to let him go to Rainbow Bridge. As I tell all my pets I loose, I LOVE YOU & I WILL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE. This is a little memorial just for him. Lucky was a really good, kind dog! We miss him so, so much!
Katie
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- 4 years (28 dog years)
- Katie Smatchie
- Sits up on hind legs & uses her whole body to look around
- Tearing the stuffing out of everything!
- She was in a high-kill shelter about to be put down
-
Katie came to us from a high-kill facility that wasn't going to let her have the five days allowed. You see, Katie has only half a right front leg. She was born this way & uses it just like she would as if she had a whole leg! She is an inspiration to anyone that sees her. Her whole body has adapted to her leg being shorter then the other & it doesn't slow her down AT ALL!!! She keeps up with all my other rescues! When we took her for her 1st vet visit we were told the leg had to come off. But I convinced the vet to just watch her & see just how good she gets around. Of course he agreed! She has since been adopted by a wonderful family with kids & other dogs for her to play with. They love her & say she is one of the smartest dogs they have ever known. I have become a better person just knowing Katie & how some things in life are so inspiring, you will never ever forget her!
Suzie Q
- Beagle/English Bulldog mix
- 15 years (105 dog years)
- Smooze mooze
- Talks when talked to
- Stands like the Merrill Lynch Bull
- She was in bad shape left on the side of the road
-
Suzie came to me after I found her on the side of the road. Her head was a massive soar, she had just had puppies & was very thin. Being a foster home already it was only natural to pick her up & care for her. I later found out she was from a house nearby that was using her for breeding & fighting! Needless to say they didn't get her back! She & were both diagnosed with Cancer this year at the same time. Hers is a mast-cell & mine was Liver. We will spend what time we have left just loving each others company & being grateful for each other. She's my nurse & I'm hers!
Kathy
- Healer/mix
- 8 years (62 dog years)
- Kathy girl
- Catches flies in mid-air
- Eats bird seed
- Taken from a hoarder situation
-
Kathy came to us with Dixie from a hoarder. She was only 3 months old when this lady got her & never tried to find her a home. She was subjected to a very cruel sport of "come get your food & I'll kick you when you do" We know it was a man because she was very afraid of my husband at first. She has now come to love & appreciate both of us as equals knowing we will NEVER, EVER mistreat her or let that happen again! She is very protective but a bit shy at times. She is a wonderful dog to play catch with & shares all her toys with the other dogs. She had a very hard young life but has come full circle to be a very smart & loving dog! Check her out on SLAL.ORG as well. She is very sweet & deserves a chance to find her forever people.
Scout
- July Hound
- 6 years (48 dog years)
- Hound dog
- Opens his gate & goes in his pen on his own
- Eats the dirt!
- Found in a rain storm, starved & unable to walk on two legs
-
Scout came to us on a very stormy night dragging two of his legs & exhausted. We took him in & at first he really had no idea about interacting with people. But he does now!! He absolutely loves any toy you give him especially his Nyla Bone! He has learned to just be a dog & run & play with the other dogs. He has the sweetest temperament ever & is alot of fun to play with. He never gets tired of being petted & loved on, which of course he gets alot of! He has turned out to be very smart & learns very quickly. He's looking for that forever home as well, please visit SLAL.ORG & find him there!
