Question:

What is parvovirus?

answered by Patti Iampietro

Answer:

Parvovirus is a viral disease that affects dogs' bone marrow by lowering white blood cell counts and therefore suppressing the immune system. It also affects the gastrointestinal tract causing vomiting and diarrhea.

Parvo is typically seen in dogs less than a year old, often without previous vaccination. It debilitates the pup by causing dehydration and malnutrition and simultaneously prevents the pup from fighting off subsequent bacterial disease by suppressing the immune system.

Treatment includes aggressive fluid therapy, antibiotics, and a focus on good nursing care and hygiene. Without prompt medical attention, parvovirus can be fatal.

  • CAN i administer my dogs' vaccines at home?

I have to do my dogs annual booster shot and I also need to do all the initial vaccinations on the brother and sister puppies I adopted about a month ago when they were 9wks old. So, I'd like to do it myself for the simple fact that I want to become a more knowledgeable owner, myself. Although I understand it can be much cheaper, as well. Also, could anyone please refer me to the most legitimate, reputable, & credible distributor or retailer to buy the vaccines from? (and are they pre-measured; is there a kit? please send some advice my way? Thanks for all the help!
